Mayor’s Office of Employment and Training

Mission and Purpose

The Division has a primary focus, to service unemployed low to middle income adults, seniors and disabled residents of the City of East Orange.

Our program offers employment activities and training that will maximize the opportunities for a career to obtain entry level/professional jobs and achieve their goal of self-worth and independence through providing a new career.

We will work with you in your quest to achieve a “Life Change” by offering Counseling, Mentoring, Job Clubs, Personal Developmental Plans, Community Resource Information, Referrals, Office Etiquette and Empowerment Workshops. You will also have use of “State of the Art” computer equipment, telephones, fax machines and copier service for your job search.

New to our Division is the offering of FREE skills training courses. There will be “Skills Training Seminars” to announce the beginning of each training course and alert the public of the up-coming opportunities. The training programs will provide participants who successfully complete the training with a new career.

HOW TO ENROLL
Clients will receive an introduction to services, as well as assistance in completing the required forms to determine eligibility for specific programs offered throughout the Employment and Training/Workforce Development System. They will also be referred to other services offered through our partners. Services available through the Employment and Training/Workforce Development network include the following: Assistance to employers in need of hiring skilled workers; Orientation; information and/or referrals to jobs, education, and training; Career assessment/counseling; Job search assistance; Job placement assistance; Interview preparation techniques; Labor market information; Transportation services; Telephone access and computer room to contact employers; and space for employers to interview participants for job opportunities.

Training Courses
The Mayor’s Office of Employment and Training provides funding for training with our partner organizations. Contact our office for a current list of Training opportunities.

Job Club
A series of workshops that assist our clients with their job search covering topic from proper grooming and dress and how to nail your interview. Job developers are also available to help edit and revise resumes. You must be registered as a client with our office to participate in Job Club.

Annual Summer Work Experience Program:
SWEP and the College Intern Program are components of the City of East Orange’s Youth Work Initiative. The program is primarily funded by the City of East Orange with the participation of the private sector that has provided job opportunities for our youth. It is a six-week summer employment program for youth ages 14-24 who are East Orange residents. An average of 200 participants are placed in private and public sector jobs; i.e. Local non-profit agencies, the Municipal Court and City Departments every year.

To apply for the SWEP Program:
Look out for our Annual Summer Youth Employment Kick off in April. Applications are distributed at that event.

To apply for the College Intern Program:
Please inquire with our office via email (youth-2000@eastorange-nj.gov) or phone (973) 677-8914. Applications are usually available in Late February and due in early May.
